How to save money at home during winter

I don’t know about you but my monthly costs seem to sky rocket during the winter months.

We’re at home more, the heat is blasting and there are many more movies on the tv. All these things are eating away at your gas and electric. Here’s some money saving tips to help during the winter months.

Close curtains

This may seem like a really simple one but closing curtains early in the evening and getting a front door curtain installed can save you money in the long run. Closing curtains keeps the heat in meaning you won’t need to keep the heating on for as long therefore saving you money on that expensive gas bill! You can also invest in draft excluders to keep the heat in.

Shop around for gas and electric

This isn’t something you should necessarily do during the winter months but it’s worth doing each year at renewal. Make sure you’ve got the best deal for your families needs for both gas and electric. Use a company like USwitch to make sure you’ve got the most competitive rate and keep an eye out for any sign up offers or incentives. You can also use sites like Topcashback and Quidco to get some cashback on your energy bills.

Apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme

If you’re a low income family make sure you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme which can save you up to £140 off your winter energy bill each year. Not all energy suppliers honor the Warm Home Discount Scheme so this is maybe something to take into consideration when picking an energy supplier

Bundle Up

Again maybe an obvious one and definitely more difficult with little ones but rather than putting the heat on as soon as you feel chilly, bundle up in layers and jumpers or get cosy on the sofa with a blanket. Also make sure you wear a good coat and gloves, scarf and a hat when outside during the winter. It takes much longer to warm up at home if you’re already freezing cold from the outside.

I hope these tips are helpful and can help you save some money through out the winter.
